urns for manzanita
Urns for Manzanita is a memorial tribute for that which burned and for those who experienced the 2017 Firestorms.
Functioning symbolically, the urns hold sacred ashes and transport precious water, reminding us of the importance of handmade vessels throughout history and across cultures for sustenance and ceremony. The urns themselves are fired black clay and are aesthetically tied to charred Manzanita wood.
The Lovall Valley Road site, which inspired this piece, evokes emotion and loss as the charcoaled Manzanita skeletons remain in the transformed landscape. Through the ashy layers below, wildflowers, poison oak, and grasses poke through to remind us of rejuvenation and resilience.
Thank you Ben Betourne, Margie Maynard, Kuros, Lexi Bakkar, and Kari Wishingrad for making this project possible.
